About Me

Hi there! I'm Ümit Kara. I am a computer engineer from Sakarya, Turkey. I was born in 1997 in Istanbul. My enthusiasm for computers started when I was a small kid. I was introduced to programming at primary school. I started to learn Visual Basic. I built my first program with it, a calculator. After that my curiosity began to grow. After a while, I started to learn C# and build more visually enhanced programs with WPF. During that time, I became interested in web development. I started to learn HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I built my first website as a school project. All of these experiences made me want to be an engineer. I work on web and mobile development. In addition, I worked on data science and machine learning projects. I'm curious about all fields of computer science and I want to develop my skills as far as I can.

What I Do

Data Analysis & Machine Learning

I was very surprised when I first saw a machine learning model. It's because I am well aware of programming and how it's accomplished, but have not seen something very complex and dependent on input. After that, I started looking for it. The field is very interesting and sometimes you feel like you're a mathematician... The first thing I did with ML was to analyze the Titanic dataset. After that, I dive into movie ratings and earnings. Most interesting thing I've done was working with music. I tried to implement NEL Spectrogram based music genre classification. Despite the fact that it wasn't successful, I learned a lot from it.

Graphics & Digital Design

While I was in high school, I started to learn about digital design. I knew a thing or two about Photoshop, but in high school I improved my skills. I made a lot of posters, flyers, and banners. I also made conceptual website designs. It is inspiring and exciting to work on artistic projects. Design is something I'm always curious about, so I strive to improve my skills.

Mobile Development

Mobile programming is a topic that I haven't spent as much time on as web programming. I created a couple of basic Android applications with Java. My most significant mobile development project was developing a Twitter clone with Flutter. Coming from the web, I get mobile programming easily. In the near future, I hope to work with Kotlin and maybe more Java.

Web Development

Even though my programming journey started with system languages, I also improved my skills with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. As well as digital design, web design is a hobby for me. I've worked on web development projects with various languages, such as PHP and Python. Working on such projects improved my programming abilities and gave me the opportunity to learn some other languages like Typescript. At this time I'm writing this, I didn't touch some popular Web-Dev areas like Angular, React or Ruby on Rails. While I'm looking forward to gaining experience with those languages and frameworks, I also want to strengthen my skills with the languages and frameworks that I already know.

Game Development

I like playing games. I think everybody like to play games. Some play RPG games and some play board games. I like playing board and strategy games. This made me interested in game development. I developed several minimal games with Javascript, Python, Lua and Godot.
